The Inner Spark that Started a “Fire”

Writing is Jazmund’s passion! From crafting handmade cards for her parents on holidays as a child to having her first original poem published at age 11, she knew writing was what she was born to do.  As a shy child coming from humble origins, creative writing was a way Jazmund’s parents encouraged her to express her feelings. She would often get lost in her craft, so much so that she ended up collectively writing at least 70 poems, short stories, and plays by the time she was 14.  Shortly after,  Jazmund’s fascination with journalism and pop culture news started.

During her teenage years, Jazmund loved watching popular entertainment news shows such as BET’s 106 & Park, E! News, and MTV’s TRL—pretending she was an interviewer. Her mom got her subscriptions of almost every teen magazine at the time-- Teen Vogue, Seventeen, J-14, CosmoGIRL, and more. Jazmund’s eyes would widen and she’d catch herself smiling uncontrollably as she flipped through the pages. It wasn’t just the juicy pop culture news that jumped out of the magazine pages. Jazmund was fascinated by the layout, the way writers crafted their stories, and the catchy wording of the headlines.

This inspired her to become the student newspaper editor at G.W. Carver High School. It was a spark that ignited a passionate fire in her to pursue writing in various forms as an adult. Shortly thereafter, Jazmund attended UAB where she earned her degree in Communication Studies with a Journalism concentration, graduating with university honors.

A Failure to Launch

Unfortunately, after graduating, Jazmund encountered challenges finding employment in journalism during the 2009 recession and the emergence of digital journalism which resulted in layoffs of many of her contacts in print publications. Navigating a move out of the South to a state with more job opportunities presented challenges due to her financial circumstances at the time. Instead, she took an eight-year detour working successfully in academia by helping students of all backgrounds with academic growth for college prep. Despite this career shift and initially feeling distraught, Jazmund believes the journey was a blessing in disguise. With God as her career guide, she found her way back to her first love – writing.
